First I must say that this complete set-up is a derivative of one that the great Glen Mallory has produced in the past for drag racing. However, with some careful modifications it isn't identical, and has many of my own touches. Since the electric slide luber kits from Black Magic run right around 140 bucks, i thought that it would be cool to share with everyone how to build there own for roughly 40 bucks (possibly less). First thing you need to do is gather parts. You will need the following:
(2)- 5/16" 45 degree brass (or plastic) plumbing fittings with one end male and the other end female.
(2)- 5/16" hose barbs that fit take 1/4' hose
(2)- 5/16" end caps
(1) windshield washer pump
(1) 1/4" hose tee fitting
(1) bag of zip ties
(6) small stainless steel hose clamps
(1) enough wire to run from the lighting coil or battery to the pump
(1) 12 volt toggle switch
(1) large hose clamp that fits around the washer pump
The washer pump for this application is from an early 90's chevy full size pick em' up truck. it has a nice rectanglar shape, and electric pump built in, and holds a lot of liquid. I got mine for 10 bucks from the local junkyard.
I perfer also to get clear tubing so you can make sure that the system does have a clog in it. but regular black hose would work.
First start by marking the skid for drilling. You need to drill one hole through the side of the skid about two-three inches in front of the point where the track rubs the most (spot on the slides that has the most dirt in it and is wore the most). once that hole is drill you need to mark a spot on the slides that is exactly on the center of the rail and the center of the hole. this has to be perfect or it will come out the side which i have done :( take your time marking, and it should come out right. when you have the hole drilled insert the male end of the 45 degree fitting in the hole you just drilled. about 1/4" should stick out the other side. take the end cap you got and screw it on, and tighten it up. don't put teflon tape or silicone on it to seal it up yet! with the fittings tightened uptake the same drill bit size that you used for the hole through the middle of the slides (a small one!) drill a hole through the brass fitting. you only want to drill through one side, so when you feel it break through stop. then take off the brass fittings and clean the shavings out. now you can seal everything up. i used teflon tape on the threads, and silicone where the parts butt up against the rails.
then just tighten everything up. I also ran a countersink bit on the slides themselves to make a larger path for the lube to flow from. next attach the 1/4" hose to each barb, clamp them, and put in the tee fitting. i turned mine so that it was more of a Y-fitting that a tee fiiting, but that is up to you.
then as you move up the skid be sure to zip tie the hose to the rails so it doesn't get caught in the clips or lugs. you will have to drill a hole in the tunnel to have the hose come through, and where you put it is again a choice you will have to make.
i have a nice little stand that is bolted to the chaincase where the oil injection used to be. once my pump was on it i used the large hose clamp to hold it in place. I may add a second just for safety. connect the hose from the tunnel to the washer pump, and clamp it on. Next just use the toggle switch you picked up and the wire to either tie it in with the lighting system or to hook it to a motor cycle battery. fill it up with lube, and you are ready rock with less slide friction and more speed!
WARNING: Remember i am not responsible for anyone damaging their tunnel or rails. attempt this at your own risk. in the event of a crash, a motorcycle battery could explode and soak you with acid. i am also not responsible for this of any other accident or damage caused by the above procedure. yake your time and everything should work just fine.
